Looking up from my book I saw the smile.
Reading has always been a big part of my day. A great biography, a discourse on science, a Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, or an intriguingly mindless novel…there is usually one of each on my reading table. More than one, often.
Reading late into the night provided two benefits. On many nights, sheer enjoyment as the chapters raced forward from scene to scene, dragging me along like a skateboarder car-surfing through the streets. On other nights, a sleep inducer to carry my ever-active mind from reeling thought to a trance-like REM dream state.
But not this night.
The smile expressed itself not just in the spread of the lips, but in the warm glistening of the eyes, the rosiness of the cheeks, even the way the ears rose in expectation. Suddenly the book seemed incongruous.
It was bedtime.
